  1. Compare and Contrast We are quite different! We are so much alike!

  2. What do you already know about this skill? Use your prior knowledge. What does it mean to compare? What does it mean to contrast? My previous teachers taught me to compare and contrast by____________.

  3. Compare • What two or more things have in common- the similarities Can you find the similarities between us?

  4. Contrast • What two or more things don’t have in common- the differences How are we different?

  5. A flashback- the Venn Diagram How does this work? In the middle of the Venn Diagram I would put ________________. In the outer parts of the circle I would put ____________________.

  6. How does this Venn Diagram work?

  7. Why should you care about comparing and contrasting? • It helps you comprehend what you read. • It exercises your higher level thinking skills. • It is used in all subjects – language arts, science, social studies, unified arts. • It helps you make decisions about the similarities and differences between items, places and people.

  8. Middle School Expectations Using Compare and Contrast • One difference, one similarity • Two differences, two similarities with two different texts • Compare and contrast character feelings • A quote and then support with something from another text • Use of harder text

  9. We compare and contrast each time we need to make a decision between two (or more) things. For example, “Which ski resort is best for me?” The Summit at Snoqualmie rocks! Steven’s Pass rules!

  10. How are Steven’s Pass and The Summit at Snoqualmie the same? How are they different?Knowing this, which one is best for me? The Summit at Snoqualmie Steven’s Pass

  11. How are Steven’s Pass and The Summit at Snoqualmie the same?

  12. How are they different?

  13. Beyond the Venn Diagram

  14. Beyond the Venn Diagram

  15. The JourneyStories of Migrationby Cynthia Rylant

  16. Migration The periodic passage of groups of animals (especially birds or fish) from one region to another for feeding or breeding

  17. Locusts and Whales

  18. With partner, discuss … • Why does this animal migrate? • Where and when does it migrate? • How does it migrate? • Other interesting facts

  19. What are two ways locust and whale migrations are similar? What are two ways locust and whale migrations are different?

  20. What are two ways the locust and whale migrations are similar and different?

  25. Steven’s Pass and Snoqualmie

  26. From Graphic to Response • Just like when you are writing an essay or research paper, a graphic organizer can help you organize your thinking, but is not a complete response. • Take your ideas from the graphic organizer and turn them into a short paragraph with complete sentences.

  27. From Graphic to Response • A sample response using the information from Steven’s Pass and The Summit at Snoqualmie.

  28. From Graphic to Response – Steven’s Pass and Snoqualmie

  31. From Graphic to Response

  32. From Graphic to Response • You can use the same format to write a response for the similarities and differences using your graphic organizer for locusts and whales.

  41. Stop!! • ½ room similarities • ½ room differences • Hand out scoring guide, go over • Write paragraph in pairs • Pick best • Share with class, teacher scores

  44. Whales / Caribou

  45. What are two ways the whale and caribou migrations are similar? What are two ways they are different? Use information from both selections to support your answer.

  46. Similarities- Whales/Caribou Whales and caribou share two important similarities. Both animals must travel from the Artic to warmer locations for the winter. Whales can’t survive in the solid ice of the Artic seas during the winter. Caribou cannot find enough food to eat under the winter blanket of ice. Both animals also travel in groups. The whales look for traveling companions in the fall. Small groups of caribou join other small groups to form a large herd. As you can see, whale and caribou migrations are quite similar.

  48. Differences- Whales and Caribou Although whales and caribou share similarities, they also have several significant differences. While both migrate, they travel different distances to reach their location. Whales travel 6,000 miles, while caribou travel just 600 miles. They also travel in different environments. Whales swim in the world’s oceans while caribou travel on land. Whales and caribou have some significant differences.
