The Founding of Plymouth Colony: A Pilgrim's Journey to Religious Freedom
Plymouth Colony, America's first permanent Puritan settlement, was established by English Separatists in December 1620. Seeking religious freedom, the Pilgrims fled persecution under King James of England. They sailed from Plymouth, England, aboard the Mayflower, enduring a 65-day journey before landing near present-day Provincetown. There, they signed the Mayflower Compact, agreeing to create just laws for the colony. Despite facing harsh winters and illness, the Pilgrims developed relationships with local tribes and celebrated their first harvest, which later became known as Thanksgiving.
