5. What is not organized/sanctioned by Handsworth Grad council and school • Outside organizations • Big White (or other)Ski Weekend • Spring Break trips (no teachers aboard) • Limousine Scams • After Grads/After formals • If in doubt, call the school !!!!

6. PROSPECTS 2014-2015 GRAD UPDATES • Prospects will be posted on the school website two or three times per year

Getting the record straight… • Diploma Verifications • Students have already seen these in Planning 12 and programming last year • Students/parents correct errors – online marks, external credits, etc • New data transferred to the Ministry regularly • Unofficial transcript available at BC Ministry of Education website

8. Diploma Verification Report (DVR) Purpose of DVR’s: • verify the information sent to Ministry • double check all graduation requirements met • student’s responsibility to make sure the information on his/her DVR is accurate and to ensure missing requirements are being addressed • Students will review their official DVR in Planning 12

9. Transcripts • Unofficial transcripts available by order in the main office (sign up sheet – 1 week) • Record of successfullycompleted Gr. 10, 11 & 12 courses • Official transcripts mailed to home address in August.

13. Applying to BC Post Secondary schools ……. • Early admissions deadline February 28 • Note : UBC – Jan 31 • -Apply online at www.applybc.ca • -Need PEN, Faculty (1st, 2nd choice) • -Pay fee (credit card) • -Student account will be set up – pay attention to next steps, deadlines, etc.

14. What About My Grades? • Self-reporting grades • You will probably be asked for 1st Term Grades • You will be asked for 2nd Term Grades • Electronic submission of grades • Final grades to be sent by the Ministry - August

15. So, I have… • - applied to the post secondary institution(s) • - self-reported my grades • NOW WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

16. Next… • - The university will cross check your grades in early May • - Offers will go out in May / June (may depend on GPA) • - You will accept or decline the offer • - Course registration – late June/ early July

HOW DOES THE UNIVERSITY GET MY MARKS? • You will complete the PSI form (Post-Secondary Institutions) in Planning 12 class this fall • Gives the Ministry of Education permission to release your school and exam results to the Post Secondary Institutions that you indicate --Available only in electronic format • PSI selections made between November and mid July. Form available only until JULY 15.

Possible Paths to Take in Post Secondary Education • High School Diploma – Dogwood • Certificate Program – 8 months – 1 year • Diploma Program – 1 – 2 years • University Transfer – 1 – 2 years • Undergraduate Degree – 4 – 5 years • Graduate Degree – 6 years in total ----4 undergrad years + 2 graduate years

26. Application Process… BC –use www.applybc.ca Alberta – use www.applyalberta.ca Saskatchewan & Manitoba – directly to the school website Ontario –use www.ouac.on.ca Quebec –directly to the school website Maritimes –directly to the school website KNOW YOUR PEN # (9 – digits)!!

27. Once you apply on line • keep track of all applications – GT Binder / file folder • Will receive student # & info on how to access your student site • Look for contact info in confirmation email/letter • Check if additional/supplemental applications are needed • Continue to monitor account for any additional paperwork/deadlines etc.

28. Reporting Grades for online courses • Distributed Learning, (ONLINE), courses are different…see me if you are unsure • DL school sends grade to Ministry • IDEALLY - complete DL courses by March/early April so the DL schools can submit grades • course must be at least 50% complete by end of March/early April for a submission of the mark to the Ministry (there are exceptions- double check)

29. ONE LOCAL EXCEPTION FOR DL GRADES • FOR UBC… – If you wish to use your Distributed Learning (online) course in the calculation of your competitive admission average, the course must be 100% complete by February 1, 2015. - Online courses that are being used to meet prerequisites, ( for example, French 11), can be completed by June 30, 2015

If going out of Country… United States • Usually a lot of paperwork! • Sometimes common applications forms • Stay ahead of deadline dates • Will need to send paper transcripts • Check each institution requirements carefully! • SAT’s www.collegeboard.com/newsat • American Universities determine the eligibility of applicants by their Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) results combined with their High School marks. • You should write your SAT (hopefully done!) as soon as possible if you are planning to attend a U.S. university.

Ministry of Education Awards • Provincial Scholarships • excellence inthe 5 mandatory exams ($1000 for top 5000 Gr 12 students in BC / $2500 for top 20 students in BC) Must have at least a 73% final mark in English 12. • District Scholarships • excellence in non-academic ($1000) • Passport to Education • Gr. 10 $ 250, Gr. 11 $250, Gr. 12 $500

School based Scholarships • Pool of Scholarships and Bursaries • Decided at the School Level - Scholarship Committee. • Due in January – Handsworth Scholarship form available in Planning 12 and on the web page • General criteria includes: - academic standing - volunteer service - extracurricular involvement • Specific Criteria – depends on Scholarship or Bursary
