  3. Chapter 6 Review • Were the Lower Canada rebellions against the British government a success for the “Patriotes”? Why or why not? • No, because they were easily defeated by the British troops. They had no military training and few weapons. Many “Patriotes” were jailed, exiled, or executed.

Why? - FAILURE: 1000-1500 British loyalists marched to Montgomery's Tavern and dispersed the remaining rebels. - In the end, 880 rebels were arrested. Most were released, but 20 were hanged, 92 were sent to prison colonies in Australia, and 26 were banished (not allowed to live in Canada). After the failed rebellions in Upper Canada, Mackenzie escaped to the United States, where he remained in exile until 1849.
