  1. Puritans A protestant group that wanted to purify, or reform, the Anglican church. Thought Priests and Bishops had too much power.

  2. Pilgrims • One separatist group that left England to escape prosecution.

  3. Immigrants • People who have left the country of their birth to live in another country.

  4. Mayflower • Boat that left England with more than 100 men, women, and children. • Mayflower Compact: a legal contract in which they agreed to have fair laws to protect the general good. • The 1st attempt to self-government in the English Colonies.

  5. Squanto: An Indian that lived in Europe and spoke English well. • Taught the Pilgrims to fertilize the soil with fish remains. • Pilgrims and Wampanoag became friends and got together for the first THANKSGIVING>

  6. Pilgrim Community • Women: wove, cooked, sewed clothing, made soap, butter. • Men: fixed tools worked in the field. • VALUES: taught their children to read, write. • Valued religion, family, community.

  7. Women Pilgrims rights • ENGLAND: not allowed to make contracts, sue, or own property. • IN AMERICA: Right to sign contracts, bring some cases before court, widows could own property.

  8. Puritans leave England • England's economy suffered. • CHARLES 1 …raised Taxes. • Charles refused to let puritans to criticize church actions.

  9. THE GREAT MIGRATION • 40,000 left England for (Colony) New England • Granted to start the Massachusetts Bay Charter • John Winthrop: Led the puritans to New England and was to build an Ideal Christian Community.

  10. ThomasHooker • Founded Connecticut • He wrote the Fundamental orders of Connecticut • Father of Democracy

  11. Minister Roger Willaims • Colony of Rhode Island. • Believed in the separation of church and state

  12. Anne Hutchinson • Believed people’s relationship with GOD did not need guidance from ministers. • She was tried and kicked out the colony. • Founded the colony of Portsmouth, a part of Rhode Island.

  13. Ready To start their colony • Puritans brought large amonts of tools,livestock.

  14. Differences in Northern Colonies than Southern Colonies. • Terrible soil, no cash crops, Needed no slave labor because of this. Slaves were mostly in the south because of the cash crops and long growing seasons.

  15. Northern Colonies way of life • Traded furs, pickled beef, and pork. • Fishing was key off the coast of New England. • Whale fishing for oil lanterns. • Ship building was a big way of life for New Englanders.

  16. Apprentice life in the Northern Colonies • Lived with their master craftsman and learned from him • Promised to work for him for a set number of years. • Received food and clothing • After time the apprentice would travel and become very skilled in his trade and would become a master craftsman.

  17. Education in the New England Colony • children needed to know how to read so they could read the bible. • Court ordered a school be founded in every township of 50 families. • New England colonies had the best education. • Most children stopped their education after the elementary grades.

  18. 1st 2 colleges • Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) • William and Mary (Virginia)

  19. Differnce between the Puritans and the Pilgrims • Pilgrims wanted to separate from the church of England, • Puritans wanted to purify the church.
