  2. Definition • The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine and major landmark located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It was completed in 691-692, making it the oldest existing Islamic building in the world.

  3. Religious Significance • The Dome of the Rock, being among a complex of buildings on the Temple Mount ( the other is the Al-Aqsa Mosque ) Is one of the holiest sites in Islam, following Mecca and Medina. • Its significance stems from religious beliefs regarding the rock at its heart. According to the Islamic tradition, the rock is the spot from which Muhammad ascended to Heaven accompanied by the angel Gabriel. Then, Muhammad was taken by Gabriel to pray with Abram, Moses, and Jesus Christ. After Muhammad’s return, he called all that would believe him to join him and be a Muslim.

  4. Architectural Homage • A number of buildings have been designed as copies of the Dome of the Rock. These include the octagonal Church of St. Giacomo in Italy, and the octagonal Moorish Revival style Rumbach Street synagogue in Budapest. • This was done because the Dome of the Rock was long believed by Christians to echo the architecture of the Temple in Jerusalem. • The dome is about 60ft in diameter and it rests on 16 pillars and columns surrounded by an octagonal column of 24 pillars and columns. The walls are about 60ft long and 36ft tall and form an octagon. • The Dome took 7 years to build and the names of the 2 engineers in charge of the project were YazidIbn Salam from Jerusalem and Raja IbnHaywah from Baysan. • The purpose of the dome was to “house the Muslims from cold and heat”. It wasn’t supposed to be a mosque for public worship.

  5. Crusaders • During the crusades, the Dome of the Rock was given to the Augustinians and they turned it into a church. • The Knights Templar, who believed the Dome of the Rock was the site of the Temple of Solomon, set up their headquarters in the Al-Aqsa Mosque adjacent to the dome for much of the 12th century. • They called it the “ Teplum Domini “ it was featured on the official seals of the Order’s Grand Masters.

  6. 1948 to present • Israel took control of the Dome of the Rock during its victory in the Six-Day War in 1967. • Since 1967, non-Muslims have been permitted limited access, non-Muslims are not permitted to pray on the Temple Mount. • Non-Muslims are prohibited to visit and may not enter on Fridays, Saturdays, or on Muslim holidays. • Items like Jewish prayer books are not allowed in the Dome of the Rock.
