  1. What is a presentation stage (schema activation)? Teacher gives students a chance to share what they know about something or show what they are able to do. How does encountering relate to this? By eliciting what students know or checking on what they are able to do, teachers can build lessons on the abilities and specific needs of students. E = Encounter Students demonstrate what they know or are able to do. Teachers assess students’ knowledge and abilities. There is no explicit teaching.

  2. What does it mean to internalize a skill? Do something over and over Experiment Make discoveries Encounter more aspects Notice the results of one’s efforts Benefit from feedback and correction (teacher and students) Make it one’s own Recycle learning I = Internalize Explicit instruction and controlled practice (gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student)

  3. What does unconscious competence mean? You no longer need to think about what you are doing What does fluency mean? Do something with a certain ease Using a skill for your own purpose F = Fluency Students demonstrate that they have mastered or acquired the content

  4. When can teachers only assess student learning? Only when they see students use their knowledge to accomplish communicative tasks What is an important aspect of staging a lesson? To think about how much time and focus is required for students to improve skills and move toward mastery What do students need more time to do? Students need more time to remember, internalize, and use content than to encounter and clarify it.

  5. EIF (productive skills and grammar) E= Encounter Students demonstrate what they know or are able to do through activities or tasks. Teachers assess students’ knowledge and abilities. There is no explicit teaching. I = Internalize Explicit instruction (of rules) and controlled practice activities or tasks F = Fluency Students demonstrate that they have mastered or acquired content by doing free practice activities with ease (teachers monitor/check)
