On December 8th, 1941 the U.S declared war on Japan. On December 11th 1941 Germany and Italy (Axis powers) declared war on the U.S In the months following Pearl Harbor, the Japanese took more and more territory: Philippines, Hong Kong, Burma, Malaya, etc.
Allied advances The “Big 3” – Roosevelt , Stalin, and Churchill agreed to end the war in Europe first, then focus on Asia: • In Italy: Eisenhower took control of American and British forces in N. Africa. Rebel Italian overthrew Mussolini allowing for an Allied invasion through Italy • At the Battle of Stalingrad: Winter 1943; Red Amy defended the city against German forces. First decisive win in a new offensive campaign that drove the Germans entirely out of the Soviet Union.
D-day Video Video 2 June 6th, 1944: Allies invaded France in an attempt to liberate France from Nazi rule. It was a huge success. At dawn, the Allies ferried thousands of troops across the English Channel to storm 5 different beaches along the Normandy region of France Once on land, soldiers fought in the same conditions as no-man’s land in WW1 Within a month ( about the same amount of time it took Germany to take France) France was free.
Towards Nazi defeat • France is now free • U.S producing twice as much war resources as all Axis powers combined • Incessant German bombing • Hitler's support was declining and he had already survived one assassination attempt • German defeat seemed inevitable • By March 1945, the crossed the Rhineland border of France into Germany and the Soviet Union was closing in on Berlin from the East • All over Europe Axis forces began to surrender. • Concentration camps began to be liberated
Yalta conference • The Big 3- Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin met at Yalta in the Soviet Union to plan their end-of-the-war strategy. • Agreement: • Soviet Union would enter the war against Japan within 3 months after German Surrender. • Germany’s fate post war: Germany would be divided into four zones after the war • The entire atmosphere of the conference was filled with distrust
V-E DAY In Italy: Guerrillas captured and executed Mussolini. Hitler commit suicide in his underground bunker and Germany surrendered on May 7th. V-E DAY: The next day, May 8th the official day the war is over in Europe After just 12 years, Hitler’s 1,000 year Reich was over.
War in the pacific • Island Hopping Campaign: under General Douglas MacArthur: to recapture Japanese held Islands, like the Philippines. • Major Battles include: • Midway • Coral Sea • Iwo Jima • Okinawa Kamikaze: young Japanese men undertook suicide missions and crashed their explosive-laden planes into American warships
Manhattan Project Video Manhattan Project: secret project by the U.S to create a nuclear bomb powerful enough to end the war. Bomb created under the leadership of President Roosevelt Roosevelt passed away unexpectedly in April of 1945. Truman took over as President. The first atomic bomb was successfully tested in New Mexico 3 months after Roosevelt's death on July 1945. Truman had a decision to make: use the bomb and bring to the world a terrible new force of destruction that could be used in the future…
Atomic bomb Warnings: the U.S warned Japan that if they didn’t surrender it would face utter destruction by a powerful new force. When Japan refused to surrender, the U.S dropped leaflets over the Cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, telling civilians to flee. On August 6th, 1945 an American Plane dropped the first Atomic Bomb on the city of Hiroshima. It flattened out 4 square miles and instantly killed over 70,000 people. Many died afterwards do to radiation sickness. Japan did not surrender. The Soviet Union then declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria. Japan did not surrender. The next day, the U.S dropped a second bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing over 40,000 people.
Atomic Bomb Finally, on August 10th, 1944 Emperor Hirohito stepped in (an act unheard of yet in the war) and forced Tojo to surrender. WORLD WAR II WAS OVER
