Objectives • Explain why so many people moved to cities and examine the problems that resulted from rapid urban growth. • Identify the developments in public spaces that improved the quality of city life for all. • Describe how city residents organized to deal with the challenges of urban life.

  3. Reasons For City Growth • New farm machinery created less of a need for farm labor – migration to cities • Immigration • Job opportunities

  4. Solution: Skyscrapers • Cheap steel allowed architects to make efficient use of limited space. • The invention of the elevator helped also.

  6. New Developments: Transportation • Mass Transit – Public Transportation • Elevated railroads (1860s) • Cable Cars (1870s) • Electric Trolleys (1890s) • Subways (1897) underground railroads

  7. Leaving the City • Many middle class Americans, who could afford it, chose to live outside the city • This created suburbs: neighborhoods surrounding urban centers • Mass Transit allowed people to live away from where they work

  9. Recreation NYC: Central Park, opened in 1856. Fresh Air!!!

  10. Education Museums were built to educate the public, and create beautiful city centers. Public libraries were built to educate and serve the public. Thank you Mr. Carnegie. (2,811 free public libraries)

  11. Department StoresGiant Retail Shops began appearing in the late 1800’s • Macy’s 1907 downtown New York City • Macy’s Today Downtown New York City

  12. Problems? • Overcrowding • Unsanitary living conditions • Apartments close to factories (pollution) • Buildings with few if any windows • No running water, indoor plumbing • Fire hazards • Crime

  13. Who helped the poor? • Benevolent Societies • Religious Groups • Fire/police departments • Settlement Houses – neighborhood centers that arose in the late 1800s to offer education, recreation, and social activities to immigrants and poor people.

  14. Jane Addams • Started most famous settlement house. • Hull House – Chicago • She won Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 for her efforts. • College educated, chose to live with and help the poor.
