  2. The importance of cultural Diversity: Your classroom will contain students from different ethnic backgrounds and walks of life. It is important you respect their values and beliefs. Students need to have the opportunity to learn from other cultures or traditions It’s important to get to know your students and their family background.

  3. Thoughts and ideas for planning a lesson on diversity: • Choose a theme such as another country or group of people and learn instruments they use, movements or dances, and connect with another subject. • Social studies is easy to integrate music with. • Be respectful and sensitive when discussing other cultures. • Make sure the content is age appropriate. • Activities: • Learn dances • Make instruments • Listen to music from that culture • Learn and sing music in English or other languages Resources: Music and Movement Textbook; internet; student’s background

Lesson Example: “Luau Time” - During a discussion of WWII, the students could learn about Hawaiian music and dance. - Pg 160 contains the steps to the Hawaiian Hula - Students could listen to the style of music and learn the dance moves. Assessment: 1. The class would celebrate the end of the unit with a Luau. 2. Participation
