Welcome to Mrs. Countryman's 2nd Grade class! With 8 years of teaching experience, I strive to create an engaging learning environment for my students. I hold a B.S. in Elementary Education from Athens State and have deep roots in Huntsville. My classroom schedule includes phonics, reading, math, and special subjects like art and music. About Mrs. Countryman • This is my 8th year teaching. • I graduated from Athens State with a B.S. in Elementary Education in 2006 • I grew up in Huntsville and graduated from Madison Academy Christian School in 1999 • Married to a wonderful husband • 2 daughters and 1 step-son • Live on a farm in a log cabin

Binders • Planner – look over and sign homework section every night • Home folder – return section is for homework; keep section papers stay home • Study folder – spelling words, vocabulary words, Bible verses, Reading information
Homework • Reading - reading log and studying • Math – worksheet and facts • Bible – study weekly verses • Spelling – study weekly list *Math homework is worth 20 points each day, for a total of 100 for the week. *Teaching responsibility – students need to remember to bring homework to school on time, so they can earn all their weekly points.
Reading • Phonics – Tests on Fridays on the sounds practiced in class • Foundations and Framework • Specs logs and reading groups • New unit every 3 weeks – examples: character, retelling, setting, etc. • Test every 3-4 weeks – vocabulary, performance task with visual tool and summary, bonus will be pattern statement and process questions • Other grades – comprehension quizzes and book reports
Snack • Snack is at 9:30 • Anything except candy • Special birthday snacks at 2:15 • Plain water can be kept on desk • Students may go to the library
Spelling • Spelling words from SWR • Learning logs – daily • Spelling workbooks for more exposure to words • Spelling tests are every Wednesday • Grades – tests and classwork
Bible • Study Genesis, but main focus is on the life of Moses • Daily prayer requests and prayers • Students will learn how to find Bible verses • Bible verse tests every Wednesday – recite orally; reviews are fill-in-the-blank
Handwriting • Handwriting workbook – daily practice • Grade based on overall handwriting: neatness, letter formation, letter placement
Lunch • 10:55 – 11:25 • First 10 minutes is silent so kids will eat • Wednesday’s are “big drink” days ($1) • Friday’s are ice cream days (extra $0.75)
P.E. • 2nd grade and up must wear tennis shoes to P.E. • They may change their shoes in the classroom at snack time • Changing clothes for P.E. is only allowed on pictures day – due to time
Math • Saxon – Hands on, Technology, Practice sheets • Math Meeting Board • Guided Class Practice and Facts (side A) – check in class together • Homework – side B • Homework time is given in class on Wednesday and Friday • Math Centers – Tuesday and Thursday • Tests – look just like homework; given every 5 lessons
Specials • Computer • Library • Music • Art • Spanish
Language • Sentences, punctuation, parts of speech, etc. • Grades – classwork and tests • Tests occur every 3-5 weeks, depending on unit
Social Studies/Science • Social Studies – 1st semester, workbook, interactive videos, field trip to Constitutional Village in Huntsville • Science – 2nd semester, science lab, science notebook, interactive videos, field trip to SciQuest in Huntsville (or possible Anniston Museum) • Report card grades are not given
Accelerated Reader • Reading level based on STAR test • Not mandatory, but highly encouraged • Book It program
Parent Help • Parties, drivers for field trips, some science activities
