The National Perspective The growing push for Ecological Sustainability in VET and tertiary curriculum Extract from: “A National Review of Environmental Education and its Contribution to Sustainability in Australia – Further and Higher Education” • A sustainable institution could be identified if it displayed the following critical dimensions: • Mission statement expresses ongoing commitments to sustainability • Concepts and practices of sustainability are incorporated into all academic disciplines • There is conscious recognition of the role the institution plays in its social and ecological systems • Knowledge of sustainability is a critical concern in the hiring, tenure and promotional systems • Sustainable policies and practices are adhered to for operations, building and site management • Institutional support and services are present that support the social capital of the staff and students as well as supporting the sustainability functions of the institution.

The National Perspective Recommendations from: “VET Research Forum on education for Sustainability”, 2004 • National VET framework in Education for Sustainability – more proactive, long-term view and collaborate with decision-makers and policy-makers to identify strategic goals for VET. • Collation of resources • Mapping of learning networks – effective learning networks spanning stakeholder groups that would facilitate cross-sectoral information sharing and partnership building. • Development of guideline standards in sustainability • Case Studies – identify and document examples of existing good practice • Professional development of teaching staff • Greening VET campuses

Teacher Scan Results Summary of Results Survey Monkey questionnaire distributed via ‘Bulletin’ email 2 x $30 Co-op bookshop vouchers offered as incentive for participation 28 Respondents - 41% Full time teachers - 59% Part time teachers Majority of responses indicated a good personal understandingof ES issues. 21 respondents listed specific units or modules addressing ES. These covered a broad range of subject areas.

Teacher Workshop Results • Training packages • Possibilities for including ES through: - course content • - generic ES awareness (concern re: token inclusion) • Need for: - standard format for TP’s to ensure ES is included • - ES to be reflected in Elements to ensure content weighting • Teacher recruitment • Need for awareness of ES in teacher recruitment • Addressing current barriers to ES • Squeezed for time to cover vocational content • Flexible study limits potential for ES coverage • No DET Policy to influence Curriculum Centres • Lack of vocation specific ES knowledge in sections • Need to improve campus commitment to ES • No unified NCI approach • Need resources so teachers can learn

Teacher Workshop Results • Strategies • Provide incentives for good practice • NCI awards for individuals and teams • Prizes for participation in campus projects • Showcase good models • Develop NCI/Campus wide ES practices • Discuss at Campus Manager meetings • Take pressure of CM’s by engaging others at campus level • Include ES focus & issues in OH&S committee • Encourage student involvement by making it visible

Course Content Scan Results Ecological Sustainability Qualifications and Courses – TAFE NSW Nationally Accredited Qualifications/Courses on North Coast scope: 15 Includes: Conservation and Land Management, Natural Area Restoration, Ecotourism and Organic Farming. Strong links also to SMARTTRAIN Chemical Training and Forest Industry Studies Current Enrolments: 301 Nationally Accredited Qualifications/Courses not on our scope: 27 Includes: Environmental Studies, Environmental Monitoring, Applied Environmental Management, Ecologically Sustainable Development, Ecological Agriculture, Renewable Energy Technology, Environmental Building Principles, Sustainable Business Practices, Sustainable Plumbing Practices. Strong links also to Salinity and some Forest Industry Studies. Current Category 2 Courses: Farming Small Areas – Sustainable Land Use (proposed for Trenayr 2007), Renewable Energy & Environmental Awareness Category 2 Courses not currently offered: Environmental Auditing, Environmental Management for Landscape Construction, Environmental Management Planning, Building Practical Sustainable Homes

  12. Course Content Scan Results What Units of Competency do we deliver? 150 courses on our scope (of a total of 724) contain sustainability competencies. There are currently no sustainability Units of Competency addressed by Information Technology.
