  1. Figura 1. Hipótesis de Graves para la determinación genética gonadal. En las hembras, el gen Sox3/SOX3 inactivaría al Sox9/SOX9 y la cascada de formación de testículos no puede llevarse a cabo. En los machos, por el contrario, el gen Sry/SRY actuaría sobre el gen Sox3/SOX3, impidiendo así que éste anule la expresión del gen Sox9/SOX9, pudiendo, por ello, llevarse a cabo la cascada de acontecimientos que conduzcan al desarrollo de testículos (adaptado de Graves, 1998a y b).
