  3. Biography Born June 28 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland Wrote his first major philosophical work in 1750 Died July 2 1778 in Ermenonville, France Published the book “Du Contract Social, Principles Du Droit Politique” in 1762 In 1725 he started working as an engraver

  4. Famous Work He wrote and composed operas In 1754 he wrote the Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality. Gave his opinion on the state of nature He also wrote the Social Contract Gives his opinion on the developments of society

Philosophy “Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains” Freedom is the power to choose our own chains Meaning: Humans were born free in the state of nature, but since we judge each other it has taken away our freedom and put us in chains Meaning: We can choose whether on not to make fun of people or we can choose whether or not to listen to those making fun of us, by doing this we are choosing if we want to be free or not

Jean’s idea is still in effect by today when our citizens rally and stand up for their rights Rousseau encouraged us to not value the negative opinion of others. This belief still stands today with the LGBT community.
