a.. • A. Explain the Northwest Ordinance’s importance in the westward migration of Americans, and on slavery, public education, and the addition of new states.
Review • As the population of the colonies grew, settlers began to expand westward. • This resulted in a conflict because the Native Americans and French settlers already had established this area. • Which war did we talk about that resulted from this conflict?
N.W. Ordinance • Northwest Ordinance in 1787- The law divided the area into smaller territories and provided guidelines for new states being admitted to the Union. • This ordinance led to the eventually formation of these five states: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Slavery and the N.W. Ordinance • The ordinance made slavery illegal in the new territory. • **However, slave owners already living in the territory prior to the law did NOT have to give up their slaves. • Who would try and take advantage of this and move up North? • The White authorities passed laws requiring them to pay money if they did not own land, making it difficult for blacks to move in.
Education and the N.W. Ordinance • As the nation expanded, leaders and citizens wanted to make sure the country maintained a sense of unity and “national values.” i.e individualism and patriotism. • States began using public education as a tool to encourage the people. • Also, many states believed that they needed to educate the population in order to keep up with other nations. • States started to guarantee public education.
b. Describe Jefferson’s diplomacy in obtaining the Louisiana Purchase from France and the • territory’s exploration by Lewis and Clark.
Thomas Jefferson • Made an initial offer to France that was turned down by Napoleon for the purchase of just New Orleans. • Finally, the French emperor offered Jefferson not only New Orleans but the whole Louisiana region. • Bought for $15 Million…only 3 CENTS per acre!!
Louisiana Purchase of 1803 • The United States’ largest land purchase, roughly doubling the size of the country. • Makes up about 15 states and 23% of U.S. • What would this bring to the United States?
Lewis and Clark • Before the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson elected Meriwether Lewis, to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis chose William Clark to help him lead the expedition that departed from St. Louis in May of 1804. • Finally, November 1805, the expedition reached the Pacific Northwest coast. • People believed they were dead but they arrived back in St. Louis in September of 1806.
Who cares about Lewis and Clark! • After over 2 years of exploring they came back with valuable information about Oregon and Louisiana territories. • Led to the rapid migration of settler to the Pacific Northwest. • The pathway these settlers followed from Missouri became know as the Oregon Trail.
