  2. Opportunity This is a unique moment to: • Begin defining Surgical Education with clean slate • Integrate modeling and simulation into the curricula • Establish an international consensus for uniformity

  3. Goals To establish the following: • The fundamental infrastructure (5 conferences) • The network of multiple institutions • The consensus from the international community • Support for the 6 competencies (ACGME & ABMS)

  4. The 6 Competencies 2001 Consensus by the AGCME & ABMS • Knowledge • Patient Care • Interpersonal and communication skills • Professionalism • Practice-based learning and improvement • Systems-based practice

  5. The 5 Conferences • Metrics • Errors • Methodology • Curriculum • Outcomes

  6. Metrics July, 2001 Metrics for technical surgical skills Purpose: To establish the definitions and taxonomy of surgical skills and to survey the current simulators to identify the skills which are applicable to each simulator

  7. Errors March, 2004 Conference on Surgical Errors (COSE) Purpose: To establish the definitions and taxonomy of surgical errors and to determine how errors should be implemented in outcomes analysis

  8. Methodology November, 2004 Methodology for validation of simulators Purpose: To establish a standardized method of validating surgical simulators, with the possibility of using a similar methodology for evaluating curricula and the 6 competencies

  9. Curriculum March, 2005 Elements of a core curriculum in technical skills Purpose: To establish a standardized method and elements for a technical surgical skills curriculum, to include definitions, components, methodology and results reporting

  10. Outcomes December, 2005 Critical Outcomes for Surgical Skills Purpose: To establish a definition of the essential outcomes measures for the evaluation of technical surgical skills

  11. Conclusion • Establish infrastructure • Insure international consensus • Support the 6 competencies • Provide commonality for publication • and communications
