Files & Folders • A file is a collection of related data stored on a lasting medium, such as a hard disk. • A file can be an application program or the product of an application. • Digital cameras create photo files • Word processing creates document files • The original form the file is saved in is referred to as the native format.

  3. File Names • Each file is identified by a unique file name. • When a new document is created, a temporary, generic file name is created. • Untitled-1 or Document1 • Filename extensions are automatically added.

  4. Folders • Folders are used to organize commonly related files.

  5. Intranet, Extranet, Internet • Intranet • Used by a single corporation • Extranet • Extends the intranet by providing various levels of accessibility • Internet • Largest and most widely accessed network—a world-wide network of computers not controlled by one organization.

  6. Client/Server Interactive TCP/IP transmission control protocol/internet protocol Router Device that can connect different technologies Firewall Network security system preventing unauthorized access Internet

  7. Telecommunications • Transmitting and receiving data • Can be in various forms including voice and video • Requires a modem or adapter and a line or a cable • Speed is measured in Kbps (thousands of bits per second) or Mbps (millions of bits per second)

Telecommunication Options • Conventional Modem • Telephone lines converting analog to digital • DSL • Digital Subscriber Line modem uses standard telephone lines • Cable Modem (Optimum!) • Transmits data through a coaxial cable tv network • Leased/Dedicated Lines • Used by businesses and schools (T1) • ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) • Digital telephone line

  9. Internet Services • WWW • Used to access info on the web • NOT the same as the Internet • Web Browser • IE, Firefox, Netscape, Opera

Types of Websites • Personal • Created by individuals • Commercial • Corporate web presence • E-commerce sites • Informational • Display factual info on a topic (gov’t) • Media • Online newspapers & periodicals • Portal • Created by businesses for the purpose of giving people a starting point for the web

  11. Blog • Short for web log • A type of website where users can post entries in a journal format
