Development of Natura 2000 (5) Site selection criteria for Natura 2000: • Each species or habitat was evaluated individually taking into account its distribution in Latvia and EU • Different criteria in figures: • Many bird species – concrete amount of individuals or pairs • Some bird species – the best 5 sites in the country • For the rest of species - 20%-100% of population • For habitats - 20-100% of the total area • Sites designation based on the last updated scientific information 29 September, 2006, Engure

Development of NATURA 2000 • In the list of potential NATURA 2000 sites only Specially Protected Nature Territories or Micro reserves. • Natura 2000 includes 336 territories The protection and management regimes are various – from minor restrictions in landscape areas to absolute prohibition of any management in strict nature reserves. 29 September, 2006, Engure
