Wednesday, April 21st • Bellwork: Grammar Review—on DyKnow—Join now • The Giver and Gathering Blue • Read Chapter 19-20 (pg. 146-162) with Group 1 • Group 2 read Chapter 10-13 (pg. 100-129) • Euphemism, pg. 13-14 in packet Homework: Packets should be almost finished (except for the last few pages). Study for vocabulary quiz on Friday!!

  4. Gerunds PracticeUnderline each gerund phrase. Go on to the next page. Remember that a gerund ends in –ing and is used as a noun (a thing in the sentence). • Some people keep Valentine’s Day by sending heart-shaped cards to friends. • Sharing valentines with others can brighten a wintry February day. • The custom of celebrating Valentine’s Day stretches back a long way. • Many historians believe the holiday sprang from an ancient Roman custom of honoring two brothers by the name of Valentine. • Coloring eggs is an activity that belongs to another holiday.

Easter is often associated with the blooming of spring flowers. • In Christian traditions, Easter marks the rising of Jesus from the dead. • At the same time as Easter, Jews observe Passover by preparing a special meal, a seder. • By eating the special foods at the seder, Jews remember the flight of their ancestors from slavery in Egypt. • Playing jokes on people seems a strange way to celebrate a holiday. • However, exchanging gag gifts was a custom in France that grew into our April Fool’s Day. • A lesser-known spring holiday is dedicated to planting trees—Arbor Day.

  6. Euphemism • Definition: the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant. • For example, instead of saying someone died, we say they “passed away.” • You may not be sure about what ALL of the words on pg. 13-14 really mean, but discuss the ones you do know. • Discuss with a partner to answer #9-11 in a few sentences each.
