  1. Specialization in cells. Cells in multi-cellular organisms are specialised (adapted) so that they can perform a particular function

  2. Specialised animal cells

  3. Muscle cell

  4. Muscle Cells • Function: to pull on a bone • Adaptation: have fibres which can contract (shorten)

  5. Ciliated cells cilia

  6. Ciliated cells • Function: to prevent dirt and bacteria from entering the lungs • Adaptation: have cilia which move and sweep the dirt and bacteria trapped in the mucus back along the airways

  7. Nerve cell

  8. Nerve cell • Function: to transmit messages around the body • Adaptation: has a long extension so that messages can be transmitted a long distance

  9. Red blood cell

  10. Red blood cells • Function: to carry oxygen • Adaptation: contains the red pigment haemoglobin which combines with oxygen in the lungs

  11. Sperm cell Tail-movement of this propels sperm cell Mid-piece-provides energy Head-contains the nucleus

  12. Sperm cell • Function: to fertilise an egg cell • Adaptation: has a tail which can move and propel sperm cell towards an egg cell

  13. Specialisation in plant cells

  14. Root hair cell Root Hair cell

  15. Root hair cell • Function: to absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil • Adaptation: the long thin projection (‘hair’) provides a large surface area through which the water and dissolved minerals can enter the cell

  16. Leaf cell

  17. Leaf cells chloroplast

  18. Leaf cell • Function: to make food (by process of photosynthesis) • Adaptation: has chloroplasts (containing green pigment chlorophyll that absorbs light energy needed for photosynthesis)
