  3. Gingival Grafts: Surgical transplantation of tissue from one site to replace damaged or deficient gingiva at another site

  4. Signs of a Mucogingival Defect • Narrow or nonexistent zone of attached gingiva • Pockets traverse the mucogingival junction • High frenum attachment with tension on the gingival margin

  5. Indications for Gingival Grafting • To increase the width of the zone of attached gingiva • To augment the thickness of attached gingiva • To repair gingival recession • To prevent the progression of gingival recession (e.g., during ortho treatment)

  6. Contraindications for grafting • Sites with pronounced dehiscences in the alveolar bone can present complications • Broadly denuded root surfaces can be difficult to cover with a graft • Non-progressive gingival recession may not require treatment
