  2. What is Performance Based Assessment? • Performance based assessment is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than an answer from a ready made list. PBA is also know as: • Authentic Assessment • Alternative Assessment • Active Learning • Performance Assessment

  3. What does the research say about PBA? • Students actively construct meaning of their own understanding. • Students become more actively engaged when they have to organize, structure and apply their knowledge.

  4. What does it look like in the classroom? • No pencil and paper, not multiple choice • Rubrics given prior to start • Open ended response exercises/Hands on • Extended tasks • Portfolios – compilation of required tasks and best works

  5. What does it look like in the classroom? • Use of higher order thinking skills • Synthesis of classroom instruction • Student reflection • Practical/Real life experiences

Pros More than one correct answer Creative solutions Real life/world tasks Measurement of over-arching course goals Cons Address fewer learning objectives – time intensive Found intimidating to students used to memorization Development of clear criteria that indicate competency levels requires multiple iterations What are the Pros and Cons of Performance Based Assessment?

What theories promote Performance Based Assessment? • PBA is grounded in Constructivism • The idea of doing and creating meaning as one goes along – learning is actively assimilated • There are also elements of Social Re-constructivism • Focus is on providing students the critical tools to be agents of social change. Students explorecontroversial issues, analyze world events
