  1. Vishnu V. Zutshi for NIU/NICADD

  2. Tail-catcher/Muon System V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  3. Goals for the TC/Muon System • Provide a reasonable snapshot of the tail-end of the shower for simulation validation • Prototype detector with high-fidelity to what is imagined for a generic LCD correcting for leakage understanding the impact of coil muon reconstruction + eflow fake rate V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  4. For charged pions with >5% of E inside TC On tail-catching 10cm absorber plates V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  5. Accounting for material in the coil... 135%/sqrt(E) V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  6. Erec/Egen 50 GeV p V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  7. Fake Jets • Needed to judge the hit occupancy near the muon track • B*  B + p(35GeV) | D* + m(15GeV) | p(20GeV)+K(15GeV)+p(10GeV) • Particles are produced in 0.05 cone individually and G4 simulated hits are combined in the analysis program V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  8. Fake Jet Angular Width (dR = 0.05) TC view ECal view V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  9. s(X) w.r.t. previous layer V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  10. Stripification • Assign tail-catcher hits to strips of a given size in analysis software • Obtain x or a y co-ordinate from alternate lyrs • Take all combinations • Efficiency is defined as the ratio of the no. of times a pairwise muon hit is found within a road in lyrs N+1 and N+2 when it was present in N and N+1 • Rejection = 1-p where p is the fraction of times a non-muon hit combination was present in the road V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  11. Sets the size of the search road s(X) with strips V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  12. 1cm wide strips Pairwise ‘Efficiency’ V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  13. 1cm wide strips ‘Rejection’ V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  14. Pairwise ‘Efficiency’ V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  15. For >99% efficiency…. V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  16. Current Guess • “Fine” section (8 layers) 2cm Steel, 0.5 cm thick scintillator • Following “coarse” section (8 layers) 10cm Steel, 0.5 cm scintillator • 5cm wide strips, 1m long • Tyvek wrapping • Alternating x-y orientation • Si-PM photo-detection V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  17. 10cm wide, 5mm thick Fermi-NICADD Extruder Line V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  18. First Measurements V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  19. Uniformity V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  20. Provides better rigidity Separation Grooves 1 2 3 4 5 Epoxy/paint mixture V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  21. Response V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  22. X-talk V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  23. Response and Strip Fabrication V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  24. Uniformity Scan V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  25. Each strip wrapped in 2 layers of Tyvek Strips Wrapped in Tyvek Compare to separation groove V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  26. Signal amplitude S/N Noise amplitude MRS Si-PM V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  27. 15 p.e. Strip Light Yield V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris

  28. Summary • 5mm thick Fermi-NICADD produced extruded strips used in combination with Si-PM/MRS adequate for tail-catcher/muon tracker. • Strip-fiber configuration nearly finalized. • Putting together mechanical module to understand and resolve assembly issues. • Talking with Fermi for cart design and construction. V. Zutshi, ICLC04, Paris
