The Use of Whiteboards in Online Instruction Michael DiFelice EDTECH 522 10-14-12
General Observations • Tech version of old green chalkboard • Allows student and instructor to draw or write in real time • Incorporates chat features for communication • Ability to upload various file types • Incorporated math functions • Multiple users at one time • Audio and Video capabilities Scribblar.com
Benefits • Immediate feedback and clarification for students • Upload images, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations • and other file types • Modification of images and files within whiteboard by all users • Collaboration between students and instructor • Archived for future use • Social atmosphere allows bonding between students Scribblar.com
Disadvantages Real time communication is often productive of disjointed or widely digressing conversations, sloppy or impressionistic responses, bad spelling, poor grammar, and flippant attitudes (Ko & Rossen, 2010). • Communication between participants can be out of sync • Response time can be too slow • Slower students can become bored or dissatisfied • With more than a few students excellent management and disciplinary skills are required • Must have broadband internet connection Scribblar.com
Learning Objectives In my experience with using a whiteboard I believe it is an excellent online tool for one- to-one instruction where demonstration and clarification are required for the student to comprehend the material. It is also very useful for collaboration of material within small groups. One of the better stand alone whiteboards I have used is Scribblar.com. It is free of charge, very functional and easy to use. Use the link below to check them out. Scribblar.com References: Ko, S., & Rossen, S. (2010). Teaching online: a practical guide.
