  1. Chapter 11: Ancient Greece Lesson 2 – Beliefs and Customs Jedi Journal (Learning Target Notes)

  2. 4.) I can describe how Greeks viewed interactions with gods. • Greeks told vivid tales of the gods & sometimes showed them as cruel or selfish. • The gods had both divine (magical) and human qualities. • The gods were powerful, but also had human emotions. • Each city had a god or goddess to protect it. • Greeks created myths that explained how the gods created their world.

  3. 5.) I can explain how the Greeks honored their gods. • The Greeks created statues & built temples in honor of their gods / goddesses. • Certain days were set aside each month for various gods & goddesses. • Festivals were held and included a procession (or parade), athletic games, and poetry recitals. • The Olympics were held to honor Zeus.

  4. 6.) I can discuss what constitutes Greek epic poems and fables. • Epic poems are stories passed down through generations in the form of a long poem. • The most famous epic poems were written by Homer. They are the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey”. They are about the Trojan War & a warrior’s 10-year trip home. • Fables are short stories usually involving animals that teach a moral lesson. • Aesop is best known for writing “The Hare & the Tortoise”.
