  4. WHO ARE WE? In 1968 Black students staged a sit-in at UW President Odegaard's office demanding a minority educational program with these goals in mind: To recruit, admit, retain, educate and graduate minority students. To receive financial assistance and the necessary programs that would ensure success at the University of Washington. In 1970, the Special Education Program Opportunity Program (SEP) was renamed Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) by vice President for Minority Affairs Samuel Kelly. In 1970 the Ethnic Cultural Center (ECC) facility was proposed. In 1971 the ECC/T, a unit of the Office of Minority Affairs, had it’s grand opening. Our History : 1968

MISSION & PHILOSOPHY In support of the UW goals, the OMA/D Ethnic Cultural Center/Theatre (ECC/T) promotes an inclusive and educational environment by providing programs and services which enhance the communication and exchange of multicultural perspectives and values. The ECC/T provides programs and a learning environment where students and student organizations collaborate, develop and implement programs while building leadership and organization skills.

THE ECC/T STAFF & STUDENT The ECC/T Staff Educating Learners and Learning Educators The ECC/T Student All students on campus are prospective ECC/T students; however, an ECC/T student must demonstrate an active commitment and genuine interest in upholding the ECC/T mission. The ECC/T Organizations A registered student organization that has completed the ECC/T registration process and who’s organizational mission coincides, reinforces or supports the ECC/T mission.

  8. ECC/T CORE VALUES PLEDGE OF RECIPROCITY • As members of this community (both staff and student alike), we pledge our commitment to promote a positive climate within and outside of the ECC/T, to respect one another and to become educated about our distinct multicultural perspectives.

  9. EDUCATE To teach and prepare our ECC/T student community of the wealth of resources and opportunities at the UW to build their skill sets to become future civic leaders and global citizens. Our belief that significant amount of learning takes place outside of the classroom through their involvement in: a. Student Leadership and Organizational Development b. Community Organizations/Agencies c. ASUW and other Leadership opportunities on campus d. Mentoring Opportunities e. Interaction with Faculty and Staff

  10. ENRICH Active participation in opportunities at the ECC/T and UW significantly contributes to the success of their own self learning, identity development, cultural awareness, academic studies, and personal and educational growth.

EMPOWER As ECC/T students develop into community leaders and global citizens, they become the agents of change - creating a vibrant and positive campus climate that allows all UW students, faculty and staff the opportunity to maximize their educational and student life/personal experience; while educating others about our efforts to define a multicultural and diverse University of Washington.

WHO HAS ACCESS TO THE ECC/T - All UW students and RSOs may utilize ECC/T services. - UW Departments and Programs may rent the conference rooms, kitchens, BBQ Pit/Backyard and theatre on a space available basis or during non-peak hours. - Community programs and organizations may also rent the conference rooms and theatre on a space available basis, non-peak hours and weekends.
