Mnemiopsis leidyi Student-Cruise from Warnemünde to Gdansk 16 - 22 Oct. 2007, RV ALKOR NaT-Working “Marine Research”, IFM-GEOMAR, Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”, Kiel, Germany • 6 students (age 16-18) from different schools in Kiel, Germany, with prior experience in ocean research (NaT-Working)‏ • 2 students from Bergen, Norway: exchange students (CarboNordic) • 1 teacher from Kiel (NaT-Working)‏ • 3 scientists (oceanography, marine biology)‏ • incl. 2 day trips with 7 students and 2 teachers from Poland: winners of Science Competition Program: Training: use of scientific methods Research: sampling of Mnemiopsis (jellyfish invading the Baltic) along the cruise track Public Outreach: “Open Ship” for general public in Gdansk Cruise plan: • 2 days from Warnemünde to Gdansk • 2 day trips into the Baltic in Gdansk • 1 day “Open Ship” • 2 days from Gdansk to Warnemünde

EPOCA • Research on ocean acidification 2008-2012 • Education component in collaboration with EUR-OCEAN network of public aquaria • Goal : help public aquaria to raise awareness about acidification, research & solutions / including through school projects • 30 k€ budget for writing of educational resources & exhibit contents guidelines + workshop with aquaria

  5. TSP school conference • Input please: how to best articulate a school conference (with teachers & 2-3 pupils from 5-10 schools) with the carboeurope final conference?

Second CarboSchools booklet Publication October 2008 (?) - 3 chapters : • Key findings from CarboEurope/Ocean (+a new question: ocean acidification ?) • Examples of school projects • Actions to reduce GHG emissions • (Individuals) • Schools, pupils & teachers • Research institutes & scientists…

  7. At the scientists’ side Can we change from « business as usual » ? • Environmental impact assessment & reduction plan at institute level (building, energy, waste, recycling, heating etc.) • Reduce travel? More virtual mobility? Promote rail trips? • Choose « green » hotels & conference centers • …your ideas? • …How to push that forward?
