  1. PMCP Do you know what that stands for? Does the number 2010 mean anything special to you?

  2. Pediatric Diplomates Summer 2005A Newsletter from the ABP • 1930 AAP was founded • 1933 ABP became 5th specialty board in US • 1934 First oral examination, followed soon by written • 1988 Oral examination discontinued • 1989 2 Day written proctored examination with 7 year certificate

  3. Recertification • ABFP introduced the concept of recertification in 1969 • ABP did “voluntary” recertification in 1980 • 1988 mandatory recertification began with: • PRCP = “Program for Renewal of Certification in Pediatrics” • 2003 this changed to PMCP or the “Program for Maintenance of Certification in Pediatrics”

  4. PMCP • In 1999 ABMS (American Board Medical Specialities) developed guidelines for recertification 1999 • ABMS recommended addressing 6 competencies

  5. Competencies • Patient Care • Medical Knowledge • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement • Interpersonal and Communication Skills • Professionalism • Systems-Based Practice Note: ABP…also wants to document competence in Information Technology

  6. The PMCP’s • PMCP-G or Generalist • PMCP-S or Specialist • Subspecialities may participate in both programs • Most subspecialities do not require the physician to maintain BOTH • Most do not require PMCP-G to renew the PMCP-S

  7. Part One: Evidence of Professional Standing • This is the EASY one…I hope • Maintain an unrestricted medical license in at least one jurisdiction in the US, US territories, or Canada • Federation State Medical Boards (FSMB) and ABMS do send final disciplinary action reports to the ABP!

  8. Part Two: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment • PMCP-G Knowledge Self-Assessment • 200 multiple choice questions • Same format as testing center recertification questions • Can start and stop at any time • Need to complete by December 31st of year • Only need to do ONCE in 7 Years • NO minimum score • Will give you a % score with standard deviations and comparison to other pediatricians • Score of 75% considered likely to pass recertification

  9. Is there an alternative to Knowledge Self-Assessment? Prep Self-Assessment for PMCP-G NeoReviews for PMCP-S Neonatology (the Knowledge Self-Assessment is FREE)

  10. Part Two: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment • Decision Skills Self-Assessment • 50 clinically based scenarios • History, Physical, and Laboratory sections • Multiple choice answers (sometimes 8) • Start and stop anytime in same year • December 31st deadline • Minimum Score IS required (80%) • You can do try to pass it twice in a year • Only need to complete ONCE in seven years

  11. Part Three: The Secure Examination • PMCP-G Jan to June, Sept to Dec • PMCP-S Spring and Fall windows (specialty dependent) • Prometric Testing Centers • 4 hour test • $1250 sticker shock • $205 reapplication fee only • Fee covers the cost of the four parts

  12. Part Four:Evidence of Satisfactory Performance in Practice • Activity One: • Peer Surveys – distribute surveys to peers • Patient Surveys – distribute surveys to patients • NO minimum score • Feedback only to physicians for “self-improvement”

  13. Part Four:Evidence of Satisfactory Performance in Practice • Activity Two: • Web-based Quality Improvement • Currently only approved program is AAP’s eQIPP • www.eqipp.org • Future? Web-based improvement module on patient safety

  14. eQIPP? • Understand benefit of collecting data from your practice • Collect data on a specific disease from your own patient charts • Interpret and analyze the data so you can use it • Identify an opportunity for improvement in the practice

  15. eQIPP uggh? • Only ONCE in seven years • Can do it more often • ABP receives notification when completed • Currently there are only modules on ADHD, Asthma

  16. How much time will this take? • Licensure <1 hour • Knowledge Self-assessment 4-5 hrs • Decision Skills Self-assessment 4-5 hrs • Examination 4-5 hrs • Peer and Patient surveys < 2hrs • Performance in Practice (eg, eQIPP) 10 hrs + • TOTAL TIME….Variable

  17. Back to the 2010 Am I saved for the time being?

  18. Years up to 2009 Part One (licensure) Part Three (secure examination) 2010 and beyond Part One Part Two Part Three Part Four All phases in place by 2008 including the peer and patient surveys The breakdown…
