Border patrol violence Our issue is border patrol and border violence. It is an issue because many people attempting to cross the border are creating a ground for violence that has led to death or serious injuries. And thus created national and political problems.
Involvement The US and Mexico are involved in this issue. The US is the one who set up the border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the US. Mexicans come to the US to find quick jobs and get money for their families back in Mexico. What people don’t realize is that they plan on going back to Mexico for their families. They only come to get some money. Many people say that its inhumane to prevent someone the right to come to the US seem as how the US was built on freedom and equality for all. Others say that if we allow a few to come than they will bring their families and friends. That will inevitably lead to overpopulation.
Status Quo Currently there is a National Border Patrol Strategy that is being implemented by the Office of Border Patrol. The National Border Patrol Strategy is extremely long but for the sake of time we will do our best to summarize the main and important points. The Border Patrol’s strategy consists of five main objectives: • Establish substantial probability of apprehending terrorists and their weapons as they attempt to enter illegally between the ports of entry; • Deter illegal entries through improved enforcement; • Detect, apprehend, and deter smugglers of humans, drugs, and other contraband; • Leverage “Smart Border” technology to multiply the effect of enforcement personnel; and • Reduce crime in border communities and consequently improve quality of life and economic vitality of targeted areas. Effects and Spillovers The border has many effects on culture in Latin America. There is violence all across and around the border. It has also led to drug violence in Mexico. According to the LA Times "Violent criminal activity fueled by a war between criminal organizations struggling for control of the lucrative narcotics trade continues along the U.S.-Mexico border. “ Luckily, border violence is actually falling. In Arizona, property and violent crimes rates have fallen from 512 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 447 per 100,000 people in 2008 Statistics from the US Bureau of Justice Statistics compiled by research group Immigration Policy Center.
