  6. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-July Paris 2005 Pedagogy and tutorial of e-learningDefinition of e-learning E-learning is the effective learning process created by combining digitally delivered content with (learning) support and services E-learning is the use of multimedia technologies and the Internet to improve the quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration

  7. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-July Paris 2005 Pedagogy and tutorial of e-learningDefinition of e-learning E-learning is NOT a database where student will find all information. Learning is always a process together with other students, using printed and interactive material and with a tutor available E-learning covers a wide set of applications and processes, such as webbased learning, computer based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration. It includes delivery of content via Internet, intranet/extranet (LAN/WAN), audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV and CD-ROM

  8. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 e-learning resources Different types of resources • Enabling technology • Materials production • Learner Support • Resources Enabling the Implementation of standards

  9. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Enabling technology • Learning Management systems (LMS) • Authoring tools • Learning content management systems (LCMS) • Virtual Learning Environments

  10. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Materials production • Learning Materials • On line courses • Bite-size learning materials and learning objects

  11. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Learner support • Courses/training with built in blended approach • Some Virtual Learning Environments • Learning support platforms/systems • Some learning management systems also include learner support • Synchronous conferencing systems • Resources that demonstrate learner induction, on going support and assessment

  12. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Resources Enabling the Implementation of Standards • Associations dealing with e-learning professionals • Standard bodies (CEN, EifEL, BAOL…) • Useful databases

  13. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-July Paris 2005 Conclusions from research of different resources Research shows that resources with a degree of complexity (!) are best rated among students/teachers. Independent of country of origin. Example: Learning management systems or virtual learning environments that hold and deliver content with opportunities for tracking, assessment, learner support, administration and a variety of communication areas.

  14. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-July Paris 2005 Conclusions from research of different resources One exception however; policymaking and addressing issues of standards or quality in e-learning UK and France seem still to be furthest developed in terms of national and regional policies and quality bodies. In UK the ”Training Foundation” has established certification of e-learning professionals. In France, EIfEL performs a similar function and is involved in draw-up quality standards accross EU. Germany has ZFU (Staatliche Zenstralstelle für fernunterricht), Sweden has CFL (Centre for Flexible Learning)……….

  15. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Pedagogy and tutorial of e-learning • For e-learning to be effective, quality resources are essential when starting up, but research also shows that another crucial factor in the success of e-learning is to develop the right mixture of ingredients for the specific learning needs of individuals, groups or companies.

  16. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Standards for learning materials Criteria: • Information • Content • Learning design • Navigation • Usability • Technical and media quality • Accessibility • Technical specifications (SCORM, Sharable Content Object Reference Model). Reusable Learning objects • Ease of use

  17. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Recommendations and standards for learner support Tutoring: • Access and motivation • Online socialisation • Information giving and receiving • Knowledge construction • Development

  18. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Recommendations and standards for learner support Criteria: • Induction • On-going support • Assessment

  19. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Recommendations for learners • Ensure that the equipment meets the basic hardware/software requirements of the course and that you have appropriate skills on using the computer • Learn rules of conduct in web discussions or Netiquette and follow these rules • Allocate quite an amount of time and write a scheme for learning. If you learn at a workplace then discuss this schedule with your manager and co-workers • Try not to bother others with your studies and try to avoid learning in places where you can be disturbed

  20. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Recommendations for learners • Take a break of 20-30 minutes from e-learning • Set realistic learning goals for yourself to reach • Be active as a learner and reflect on what you have learnt • Create a peer group with other learners. It could be face-to-face or through a virtual group • Share what you have learnt with your manager and coworkers • Use all available resources

  21. UEE 27 juin-1 juillet June-july Paris 2005 Pedagogy and tutorial of e-learning • Good examples: A community for sharing experience and good examples (established under a Leonardo-project- e3) http://community.excellencecentre.net http://www.vcp.bizis another virtual community with several resourcs in e-learning
