  2. What is Bisotun? Bisotun is a historical archaeological site in the province of Kermanshah, Iran

  3. Bisotun • An inscription made by Darius the great dating back to 521 BC. • This inscription is about 1300 meters up on a mountain side. It is approximately 15 meters high and 25 meters wide.

  4. Why was Bisotun made? • Darius the great had this inscription made when he conquered the Persian empire. • It consists of a life size picture of Darius holding a bow, which depicts kingship along with himself having his foot on a figure that lies below him; two servants; and ten one meter tall people. The ten people stand to the right of Darius with their wrists tied and rope around their necks. They represent Darius conquering the people.

Bisotun • Along with the life size picture there is also a long script. • The script is written in three languages: Elamite, Babylonian, and Old Persian. • Elamite script includes 593 lines in 8 columns. • Babylonian script includes 112 lines. • And the Old Persian script includes 414 lines in 5 columns.

  6. Location • Bisotun is located in the province of Kermanshah, Iran • The province of Kermanshah is located in the western region of Iran. It borders Iraq.

  8. Province of Kermanshah • An agricultural region • Primary crops are: grain, rice, vegetable, fruits and oil seeds. • Kermanshah is full of mountains, Bisotun is carved on the side of a limestone mountain.

  9. Weather • Kermanshah is situated between cold and hot regions. So, it enjoys a moderate climate. • During winter it will get approximately 500mm of rain. • During summer, the average temperature during the day is 22 Celsius but can get as high as 37 Celsius.

  11. Currency • The currency in Iran is called the Rial • One Canadian dollar exchanges to 8,603 Rial.

  12. Accomodation • Around the Bisotun archaeological site, there is a large hotel. • Called the Azadegan hotel (4 stars) • For one night in a single room it will cost $46.92 and a night in a double room will cost $66.30 Canadian.

  13. Transportation • There are currently no direct flights from Halifax to Kermanshah. • The most common flight path is flying from Halifax to New York, from New York to Dubai, from Dubai to Tehran, and then from Tehran to Kermanshah. • Costing about $1393 one way and about $2300 for round trip.
