  4. Sample Illustration Theses • Email addresses reveal much about people’s personalities. • Television commercials are often misleading. • The kinds of toys parents buy their children reveal much about their values. • Country music appeals to some of society’s most basic concerns.

  5. Items to Consider • Are the examples relevant and clear? • Are the examples well-chosen? • Are there enough examples (3-4)? • OR is the extended example clear? • Do the examples add to the coherence of the essay? • Are the transitions appropriate (p.129)? • Is the format clear (p. 292)?

  6. Process Essay • Directional (how-to) • Complete a task or create a product • Saddle a horse, change a tire, build a mailbox • Informational (how something works) • How a copy machine works • The events that led to the Civil War
