  1. Finishing

  2. Finishes helps to improve functional and aesthetic properties. • Prolong the life of the product as well as improve the overall quality of it. • For example a steel or brass tap is often coated with chrome to make it more durable and to give it a shiny surface which improves the aesthetics of it.

  3. Functional finishes: Protect the product from oxidation, scratching and tarnishing. For example: Finishes on metals reduce corrosion Wood finishes reduce attack from damp or infestation. Plastics in general don’t require finishing but may suffer discolouration when exposed to sunlight. Plastics also prone to scratches. Aesthetic finishes include using colours to create an image or style. Aesthetic finishes can also give a sense of quality. Function & Aesthetics

  4. Preservative finishes • These are generally used to improve the resistance to damp, fungus decay and attacks from pests.

  5. Paints There are several types of paint: • Oil based which comes in a wide range of colours. It is durable and waterproof. • Polyurethane paints are tough and scratch resistant. Commonly used on outdoor products and children’s toys

  6. varnishes • These come in a gloss, satin or matt finish and are made from synthetic resins, it gives a tough, waterproof and heatproof finish. Example of this finish is furniture, and wooden toys.

  7. Electroplating • This finish makes cheaper metals such as brass look more expensive by coating them in a better looking metal such as chrome or silver. • It can make the product more durable or protect it from corrosion e.g. zinc plating

  8. Anodising • This is especially used with aluminium and its alloys and gives them a high quality finish • Coloured dyes may be added before the final lacquering of the metals.

  9. Self finishing • This is the case with high volume processes which include die casting, blow moulding, injection moulding and extrusion. • These products require little or no finishing at all due to the high quality moulds used with the machinery.

  10. Surface decoration • Engraving • Vinyl graphics
