  1. Ordination Service ForMurray James BurtMarch 30, 2014

  2. Two convictions are clear: First, there is no contradiction in affirming both the ministry of the whole people of God and the necessity and value of ordaining those with specific responsibilities.Second, ordained persons do bear the responsibility of their designated ministries, but are not a separate class within the church or a group with special access to God.The authority ascribed to ordained ministers is not to be exercised as power over others. It is not authority over the church but in the church.

  3. 3 Statements 1) Ordination is encompassed in God’s understanding of order.2) Ordination is exemplified in Jesus.3) Ordination is based in a relationship.

  4. 1) Ordination is encompassed in God’s understanding of order.

  5. Ordain literally means “to put in order or appoint”. In Scripture the whole concept of order is viewed over against disorder and chaos. • God’s order brings harmony, connection, communication, and peace

  6. 2) Ordination is exemplified in Jesus.

  7. When God stepped into our disordered lives in the form of Jesus, light shone in our disorganized darkness and brought an ordered purpose. • In the whole human life of Jesus, the order of creation has been restored.

  8. Jesus was appointed and ordained by the Father. • In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. Hebrews 1.1 • “Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Hebrews 5.1

  9. 3) Ordination is based in a relationship.

  10. The Unnecessary Pastor

  11. 1) Unnecessary to what the culture presumes is important.

  12. 2) Unnecessary to what we ourselves feel is essential.

  13. 3) Unnecessary to what people or congregations insist that they must do and be.

  14. “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1.10-11

  15. The call to ministry is a . . . call to listen . . .to Jesuscall to obey . . . Jesuscall to speak . . . about Jesuscall to walk . . . like Jesuscall to reach out in compassion to a dying world . . . on behalf of Jesus.
