OUT LINE The six important skills for beginning readers /Teachers, parents and grandparents of preschool children Letter Knowledge: Knowing that letters have names and sounds is an important first step to reading. PRINT MOTIVATIONEnjoying books, and showing a real interest in reading, is an important first step to literacy for your child. NARRATIVE SKILLSBeing able to describe things and events, and to tell stories or retell stories, is an important first step to reading

  3. PHONOLOGICAL AWARENES Hearing words as sets of sounds and being able to break apart words into these sounds are important steps to reading. Print Awareness Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how to follow the words on a page are important first steps to reading. VOCABULARY: Research shows that a child who has a large vocabulary is more likely to become a reader. Hearing and saying many different words helps children recognize many different written words and understand what they mean. Conclusion: teachers and Parents are able to recall the six skills important for preschool children.
