  2. Fun Lab Day! Colligative Properties Lab • Freezing point depression is a colligative property. • Adding a solute (salt) to a solvent (ice water) will lower the freezing point. • Why is this important you may ask… • Because, we can demonstrate this principle by MAKING ICE CREAM!

  3. Ice Cream LabMaterials Each lab group needs: • 1 quart-size ziploc bag • 1 gallon-size ziploc bag • 1 cup half and half • 1 tsp vanilla (or other flavoring) • 1 ½ Tbsp sugar • 1 cup rock salt (approx.)

  4. Ice Cream LabProcedure • Combine the half & half, vanilla, and sugar in the smaller bag. Close the bag and seal the top with duct tape. • Put the small bag inside the larger bag and pack ice all around the smaller bag. • Add about 1 cup of rock salt to the ice and seal the larger bag. • Take turns kneading the two bags together. This will break up any ice crystals that may form in the ice cream.

  5. Ice Cream LabProcedure • It will take about 15-20 minutes to get a good consistency. • Once it’s done, remove the smaller bag and use a scissors to snip off one corner. • Evenly divide the ice cream between two plastic cups and ENJOY!!

  6. Ice Cream LabMaterials Each lab group needs: • 1 quart-size ziploc bag • 1 gallon-size ziploc bag • 1 cup half and half • 1 tsp vanilla (or other flavoring) • 1 ½ Tbsp sugar • 1 cup rock salt (approx.)
