Aggregate. Collection of individuals present at same time and place but don’t form a unit or have similarity. Group. Number of persons regarded as forming a unit on any kind of mutual or common relation or classified together on account of a common degree of similarity. A Small Group.

  1. Aggregate • Collection of individuals present at same time and place but don’t form a unit or have similarity.

  2. Group • Number of persons regarded as forming a unit on any kind of mutual or common relation or classified together on account of a common degree of similarity.

  3. A Small Group • 2 or more individuals in face-to-face interaction • Each aware of his/her own membership • Each aware of the others who belong to the group • Each aware of their interdependence • All as they strive to achieve mutual goals

  4. Small Group • Persons interacting with one another (without, no group) • Interdependence: Event affects one and all • Goals: Goal, exist for a reason; unable to achieve on own • Perception of membership: perceived as a group

  5. Small Group (cont.) • Motivation: Group trying to satisfy some personal need through joining association • Structured Relationships: Interactions - Status and role relationship with norms which regulate behavior of individuals in matters of consequence to group

  6. Small Group (cont.) • Norm: Common beliefs related to appropriate behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions for members • Role: Set of expectations defining appropriate behavior for one in relation to others in group • Mutual Influence: Interact in a way which influences each to the other

  7. ASGW • Group Work • A broad professional practice that refers to the giving of help or the accomplishment of a task in a group setting.

  8. ASGW • Group Work (cont.) • It involves the application of a group and process by a capable professional practitioner to assist an interdependent collection of people in reaching their mutual goals which may be personal, interpersonal, or task related in nature.
