  1. Steel Cylinder Liners Are Better Than Aluminum When you see the steel at first it seems like unsuitable material for making cylinder liner. The density of steel is almost three times of aluminum and it has low thermal conductivity. Manufacturers of cylinder liner India use steel for liners because it can provide the lowest total engine mass, despite of its density. Its strength and stiffness are the major advantages and this is why manufacturers pick steel over aluminum for constructing cylinder liners. Aluminum cylinder liners are famous because they conduct heat well and the coefficient of expansion between the piston and liner can be closer to ideal than with a steel liner. Unlike steel, it has low allowable stresses, and so the material’s thickness increases to keep stress in the limits. This implies that the material and the water jacket surrounding it are bigger, and the bore centers are apart than in the case of steel. This makes engine block heavier, and the crankshaft is heavier and longer. Regardless of the light weight structure of the aluminum cylinder liners as compared to steel, the new engine design is heavier.

  2. There is nothing about the steel that it can compete with the aluminum. If manufacturers use standard grade of steel, they need a much larger cold clearance between piston and liner. Aluminum cylinder is better than aluminum cylinder with a steel sleeve. Traditionally, most engine cylinders were produced with cast steel. This was because it is inexpensive and practical. These engines often got overheated, and cast steel took a lot of time to gets cool. This was the bigger problem for air cooled engines. To make the solution better, Porsche came up with Biral cylinders made of cast iron liners with aluminum cooling fans. This was a real enhancement as compared to the original cast steel cylinders, yet Biral cylinders had following issues: Sleeve warping Wash boarding Aluminum separated from the cast iron liner Engines made with these types of cylinders often suffered from overheating and this stuck the engine. Manufacturers used cast steel cylinders due to inexpensiveness. Aluminum is costly as compared to steel. If you need detailed information on cylinder liners, you must contact Cylinder liner manufacturers.
