Importance of a research agenda -: • All areas of a discipline cannot be researched • All areas do not need to be researched • Allows for focus on sub-sets of an area • Builds the foundation for further research • Changes over time as new information becomes available (not cast in stone) • Becomes relevant when it addresses a need – personal, organisations, national and global • Contextual – identifies and closes gaps through the creation of knowledge

Quality Management System (QMS) “ Philosophy or an approach to management” made up of a “set of mutually re-enforceable principles, each of which is supported by a set of practices and techniques” (Dean and Bowen 1994) A QMS can be expressed as the organizational structure, procedures, processes and resources needed to implement quality management which has four main components: 1. Quality planning 2. Quality control 3. Quality assurance 4. Quality improvement

  5. Quality management is focused not only on product and service quality, but also the means to achieve it. Quality management therefore uses quality assurance and control of processes as well as products and services to achieve more consistent quality. Quality is as much a standard as a process through which consistency of planned output is achieved.

  6. The definition by Dean and Bowen, 1994 refers to mutually re-enforceable principles which are defined differently by various quality organisations. International Standards Organisation: 8 Principles in ISO 9001:2008 1. Costumer Focus 2. Leadership 3. The involvement of personnel 4. Process approach 5. System approach to management 6. Continuous improvement 7. Approach facts 8. Cooperation with partners
