SYMBOLISM • Symbolism: when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story • Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts • Symbolism in literature can be subtle or obvious • Authors may use the same object to convey deeper meaning or use variations of the same object to create a mood or feeling • Symbolism is often used to support a literary theme in a subtle way

  3. SYMBOLS IN NIGHT Fire • Appears throughout Night as a symbol of the Nazis’ cruel power • Fire and flames are used to symbolize death. Night • Darkness and night therefore symbolize a world without God’s presence • Night is used throughout the book to symbolize death, darkness of the soul, and loss of faith • Night is also used as a metaphor for the way the soul was submerged in suffering and hopelessness Corpses • The image of corpses is used not only to describe literal death, but also to symbolize spiritual death
