  2. ALA’s Mission “To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance and ensure access to information for all.”

ALA Membership “Membership in the American Library Association (ALA) is available to individuals in the United States and abroad involved in librarianship and library work; retired library workers; individuals who are notin library work but wish to support theAssociation;libraries or othernonprofit organizations; and businesses serving libraries or library workers.”

  4. Membership Dues(Personal Membership) “Personal Membership is available on a yearly basis based on the type of library work you do.” “Regular Members - includes librarians as well as others employed in library and information services or related activities in positions that: (a) require a masters degree; or (b) require a state level certification; or (c) are managerial. $60 First Year , $90 Second Year, $120 Third and Later Years.”

  5. Student Membership Student Members –“includes individuals enrolled in a program for certificate or degree in library and information studies.Student Membership is limited to five total years. $30.00/year.”

Divisions • ALA is divided into eleven divisions, “each with a type-of-library or type-of-library-function specialization.” • “Members of ALA divisions must first be members of the American Library Association. A majority of ALA members belong to one or more division.” • Divisions have dues that are in addition to ALA’s dues.

Services of Divisions “ALA divisions publish journals, books,newsletters and other materials; provide continuing education in a variety of venues and formats; offer awards and scholarships; sponsor institutes and conferences; and, maintain networks of affiliates, chapters and other collaborative relationships.”
