  2. Symbolism • One example of how symbolism is used in this story is how the mockingbird represents Boo Radley. The effect of it is that it helps to show that you shouldn’t hurt somebody if they did nothing wrong.

  3. Imagery • An example of imagery in this book was Miss Maudie’s house burning down. This helps the reader get a detailed picture of Ms. Maudie’s house as it was being burned and the mood that it created.

  4. Setting • The setting of this book was Maycomb Alabama during the Great Depression. I think that the author put the book in this setting because it provides a good backdrop for the story and helps you better understand some things in the book. For instance it helps show why there was racism and most people were poor.

  5. Theme • The theme of this book is that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don’t do anything to us except sing to us and provide us joy. I think the author included this because it relates to both Boo Radley and Tom Robinson.

  6. Foreshadowing • In the beginning it said Jem broke his arm and Scout was getting ready to tell the story of the events leading up to that event, so it hinted at events to come. The effect this had is that it let you know the point of view and that the story happened in the past and not the present.

  7. Characterization • In the beginning of the story Jem was more of a little kid but as the story goes on he starts to grow up and become a young adult. This helps to show how much time has passed and how much has changed.
