Different Types of Preschool Curricula There are so many different types of preschool curricula available out there for your children, so how exactly do you choose the right one for your child? The Ministry of Education in Singapore recognizes six different preschool curriculum approaches used by different preschools, including Montessori school, Waldorf Steiner, Play-Based, Reggio Emilia, High Scope Method, and the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. But how exactly do these curricula differ from each other? Here are the different curricula and what they entail: ● Montessori. Montessori schools encourage spontaneous learning, in which children are at the center of the learning process, and the teacher merely acts as a guide or facilitator. Young children attempt new tasks or projects, and the curriculum helps prevent them from developing bad habits. ● Play-Based. The Play-Based curriculum works under the principle that children learn the best when they are interacting with materials in an interesting and fun way. There are several playschools out there that use the Play-Based curriculum. ● Reggio Emilia. The Reggio Emilia curriculum follows the belief that children should learn in a hands-on way using all their senses. The curriculum promotes project-based learning. ● High Scope Method. The High Scope Method strongly emphasizes learning through interaction with the environment. The curriculum implements daily routines, such as following a time-table, which is thought to be super important to a child’s growth and development. ● Waldorf Steiner. The Waldorf Steiner curriculum has a strong emphasis on getting children involved in practical activities. The curriculum also frowns on exposure to large quantities of television and media, since it is thought to limit or stunt a child’s growth and development. ● Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The Theory of Multiple Intelligences views intelligence as being a multi-dimensional concept, rather than simply academic. The theory
recognizes a number of other areas of intelligence, including linguistic, logical, body kinaesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalistic. All of these different types of intelligence are implemented into the curriculum to help the child develop more holistically. Deciding on a preschool curriculum Now that you know a bit more about the six different types of preschool curricula, how exactly do you decide on the right curriculum for your child? When it comes to preschool, a well-rounded curriculum that includes arts-based and academic activities, outdoor and indoor play, a language-rich environment and inspirational educators is crucial to your child’s well being and development. There are a few questions that you can ask yourself and the preschools that you visit, including: ● Does this curriculum approach reflect my own values and expectations for my child? ● Does this curriculum include predominantly structured, facilitated or focused activities? Which type of activities work best for my child and the way that they learn? ● Does this curriculum approach suit the learning style of my child? ● Does this curriculum include predominantly physical or child-determined activities? Which approach works best for the way that my child works and learns? The most important factor in choosing a preschool for your child is that you understand how your child works and learns best and which type of learning environment would be the best and easiest for them to adapt to and enjoy.
