  2. Break in Work or Training • Anorexia (lack of appetite) • Water intake, overwork • Disease, injury, teeth, etc. • Reduce amount of grain by ½ • Ideally start evening before break • More than 2-3 d, eliminate grain

  3. Break in Work or Training • Regimen to feed grain again • Start at 0.5 lb/day • Increase by no more than 0.5 lb/day • Maximum of 0.5 lb/100 lb BW per feeding • Total no more than ½ of total diet weight

  4. Body Condition Changes • Feed adjusted to maintain proper BCS • Too low BCS – not enough fat • Less energy reserve for prolonged or frequent physical activity • Lower amount muscle glycogen

  5. Body Condition Changes • Too high BCS • Heavier, maintenance higher • Require more feed – produce more heat • Excess fat decreases heat loss • Higher heart rate • Recover more slowly
