Guidelines to Operate a Cart • Applies to ALL operators of service carts - electric or gas powered • ALL users must have a current/valid driver’s license in possession • Drivers must be 18 years of age or older • All drivers must be trained in cart operation • ALL employees operating carts must comply with all traffic laws • Employees are responsible for understanding and complying with the the manufacturer’s operating recommendations

16. Driving the Vehicle • Always check behind the vehicle before backing • No more occupants that the number of seats • Keep hands and feet inside the vehicle • Drive slow • Avoid steep grades

17. Operating Equipment Carts must have the following accessories: Accelerator Pedal Brake Pedal Parking Brake Back-up Signal In addition, some carts may have: Rear view mirrors Headlights Horn Reflectors Brake / Stop Lights All installed equipment MUST be in functioning order!

18. Cart Maintenance Departments are responsible for: • Maintaining carts. • Preventative maintenance and service checks Operators are responsible for: • Conducting safety check prior to operation.

19. Conduct a visual check of the cart before driving Is the rotating warning signal light working? Is the reverse warning signal audible? Do the brakes work? Check for correct tire pressure. Pre-trip Check

20. Pre-trip Check - Continued • Check for obstacles or pedestrians around the vehicle • Adjust mirrors • Check lights & turn signals • Be sure everything is properly stored

Obey ALL traffic signs Do not exceed cart weight capacity Sudden stops or changes in direction may result in loss of control Keep hands and feet inside at all times when cart is moving (Operator and Passenger) Avoid tipping over – drive straight up or down a slope Always remain seated until cart stops Slow down before and during turns Reduce speed, use extra care in inclement weather Bed of cart is not meant for passengers Cart Safety Guidelines

24. Should you be driving? • Are you tired, upset, fatigued, ill? • Are you taking prescription or over-the-counter medication? • Are you emotionally upset? NOTE: No one is allowed to drive a City vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs!

29. Night Driving • If you are driving at night does the cart have: • working headlights? • brake lights? • turn-signal lights • Drive cautious – pedestrians may not see you coming. • Check the lights before driving at night.

30. Carrying A Load • Do not exceed load capacity • Balance the load • Secure the load • Be sure you can see behind the vehicle • Loads can change on steep grades • No one rides in the back

33. Supervisor responsible for operation of carts Supervisor will review guidelines and procedures with all cart operators as needed. Supervisor will be notified of any violations. Cart privileges can be revoked. Repeated violations can lead to termination. Cart Safety Enforcement
