  1. The Internet EDU 6606 – Current and Emerging Instructional Technologies Dr. Deb Fortune Troy University Cindi Tapscott January 2013

  2. Brief History of Internet

  3. URL’s Uniform Resource Locator Internet address: an address identifying the location of a file on the Internet, consisting of the protocol, the computer on which the file is located, and the file's location on that computer.

  4. Navigation Techniques Yahoo Style – Menu on the left requires vertical scrolling Rollover Menu each menu item changes when rolled over by mouse Flash Menus – clicking on a heading opens menu to show sub-items Expand/collapse – clicking on a “closed” item opens it; clicking on an “open” item closes it Drop-down on mouseover the menu open automatically – no clicking required Fly-out – menus open automatically when mouse rolls over Horizontal and Vertical Text Icons and graphcs http://graphicdesign.about.com/od/effectivewebsites/tp/website_nav_types.htm

  5. Bookmarks, Favorites, Online organizers http://www.techterms.com/definition/bookmark Similar to a real-life bookmark, an Internet bookmark acts as a marker for a Web site. (In Internet Explorer, they're called "Favorites".) When using a Web browser, you can simply select a bookmark from the browser's Bookmarks menu to go to a certain site. This saves the user from having to type in the address every time he or she wants to visit a specific site.

  6. Search Engines Google, Excite, Lycos, AltaVista, Infoseek, and Yahoo are all search engines. They index millions of sites on the Web, so that Web surfers like you and me can easily find Web sites with the information we want. By creating indexes, or large databases of Web sites (based on titles, keywords, and the text in the pages), search engines can locate relevant Web sites when users enter search terms or phrases. When you are looking for something using a search engine, it is a good idea to use words like AND, OR, and NOT to specify your search. Using these boolean operators, you can usually get a list of more relevant sites.

  7. Evaluation of Websites Authority, Reliability, Credibility: Author's/creator's qualifications/credentials? Author's occupation / position / education / experience? Perspective: Does an institution or "parent organization" support or endorse the information? What is the mission of the organization? Purpose: Does the author express a particular point of view? Does the author have a bias? http://oldsite.lib.purdue.edu/rguides/studentinstruction/evaluation/websiteevaluationchart.html

  8. Troubleshooting • Poor Quality Design • Websites that overplay their hand can be a hindrance to navigation and business • E-mail Address Exposed • Many businesses publish their e-mail addresses directly on their websitewhich opens them up to unsolicited spam attacks • Broken Links • The business/website may get penalized for not keeping your site content currentand users will become frustrated and will assume that you do not maintain the website, resulting in loss of business.

  9. Problems and Pitfalls Theft of personal information, spamming, virus threats, pornography, social disconnect – oh my!
