Origins of Hip Hop: When • 1970s: Became widely known after the first professional street-based dance crews formed in the United States. • 1980s: Talented dancers with athletic prowess performed the predecessors of modern Hip-Hop dance in a variety of party dances like the Wop, Cabbage-Patch, and Running-Man. These and many others enabled a larger community of dancers to get in on the fun—those who lacked the athletic ability of a b-boy could participate in this creative dance movement set to rap music. • 1980s: Hip hop term coined by DJ AfrikaBambaataa • MCs before that used “hip hop” to describe a scat style of rhyming (ex: "Hip-Hop ya'll and ya don't stop, rock on, till the break of dawn.”)
