Genre: Expository Text • purpose is to share information with the reader or to persuade the reader to think or act a certain way • facts about real events or real people are often included • information is presented in a straightforward way • events are presented in the order in which they happened • writing may be organized by topics • diagrams, photographs, maps, or other illustrations may be included to help the reader understand the subject better

Background • The historical setting of the selection is the 17th or 18th century. • If you are on the East Coast in an area where colonization goes back to the 17th or 18th century, an emphasis on local history would be ideal. The names of the streets, hills, streams, and other places can tell a great deal about the past.
