  1. FLASHBACK A literary device

  2. Purpose • shows the audience or reader events that occurred in the past that have important bearing on the story. • Often, flashbacks give important insights into the characters or events happening in the later timeline. • Flashbacks can be achieved through dream sequences, recollection of memories, or stories told by other characters.

  3. Flashbacks interrupt… • The story to tell about something that happened in the past. Authors use words like "He remembered when … " • or • "She thought about that time last year when …”

  4. Example • "You're getting it. Good girl!" Anya cheered as she ran beside her little sister. Anya smiled, remembering when her dad had taught her to ride a bike. She could still see him running beside her, even when he didn't need to anymore! He'd always been so protective. But now, he was gone and she alone had to take care of the family. "I still need you, Dad," she whispered.

  5. How do flashbacks help us to understand the characters? • Flashbacks can give you information about a character to help you figure out his or her motives, or reasons, for doing things.

  6. Annie Sullivan • Annie Sullivan has flashbacks of when she was younger. • Annie and her brother, Jimmie, were abandoned by their father and placed in a poorhouse. • Annie remembers the terrors they experienced. • Pay specific attention to what her life in the poorhouse was like. This will help you understand her motives for helping Helen.
