  2. #1 -A bill is assigned a name and number, and can start in either house of the General Assembly. #2 - The bill is then assigned to a committee by the Speaker of the House or the Presiding Officer of the Senate (Lt. Gov.) #3 - The committee then discusses, debates, and researches the bill. EITHER #4 - Then, it can: 1. hold the bill, 2. vote it out of committee w/ recommendations, or 3. change it and vote a new version out How a Bill Becomes a Law in GA #5 - Bill is sent to Senate or House for a vote #6 – If approved by majority vote, bill is sent to other house #7 – Bill assigned to committee in other house 91/180 House THE OTHER HOUSE EITHER 29/56 Senate Sign it into law Take no action and 40 days later it automatically becomes law Veto the bill. Both houses have to have 2/3 majority re-vote to override veto BILL BECOMES A #11 – If approved by majority vote in other house, bill is sent to governor 91/180 House EITHER #8-10 same as #3-5 Governor has 3 choices LAW 29/56 Senate
